A Series of Antibody Panels

This introductory course covers some of the possible antibodies that could be detected in an antibody screen and identification. Those antibodies considered clinically significant are the main focus of the course. Several antibody identification antigrams are presented where you have an opportunity to practice ruling out and ruling in the antibody causing the positive reactions. Specific information regarding various blood group antigens are summarized.

  • Identify the correct antibody when given case studies of positive antibody identification results.
  • Name various characteristics of common blood group antigens and their reciprocal antibodies.
  • Select the number of units that would need to be screened to find compatible units when given antigen frequencies.

Level of Instruction: Basic
Intended Audience: Medical laboratory scientists and medical laboratory technicians. This course is also appropriate for medical laboratory science students and pathology residents.
Author Information: 
Rory Huschka, M.Ed., MLS(ASCP), has over 20 years of combined experience as a Medical Technologist, Technical Supervisor, Manager, Professor, and Program Director. He is the former Director of the Clinical Laboratory Science and Medical Laboratory Technician Programs at Brookline College. He is currently an educational developer at MediaLab. Rory holds a BS degree in Medical Technology from North Dakota State University and a Master's in Educational Leadership. He also holds a certificate in Lean/Six Sigma training from Villanova University.
Laurie Flood, BS, MLS(ASCP)CM, currently works as the Laboratory Coordinator for Lehigh Valley Physician Group in Allentown, PA. 
Reviewer Information: Matt Hukill, PhD, MS, MBA, MLS(ASCP)CM, SBBCM, is a specialist in immunohematology who currently works at the American Red Cross in Durham, NC.
